Easy Hand Sewing for Kids: Christmas Stocking

My son wanted to sew a stocking last night so this is what we came up with.

1.  I traced and cut out 2 stocking shapes out of green felt.  He wanted some white on the top cuff so I traced and cut that part out too.

2. Pin the white cuffs to each side of the stocking. Thread your “big” needle with 2 strands of red floss and sew across the bottom of the cuff.

3.  Sew across the top of the cuff.  Do not sew on the sides of the cuff yet.

4.  Repeat steps 2 and 3 for the back side of the stocking.

5.  Pin the two layers together and starting at the top of one side of the stocking, stitch all the way around the stocking.  Going through the four layers on the cuff may be difficult some some children.

6. At the end use the left over floss to make a loop for hanging the stocking.

*This could be made easier by not adding the white cuff or by punching holes around the whole thing and then having your child weave through the holes.  I would use one of those smaller craft punches that you hit with a hammer to make the holes.  Click on the picture to get a closer look at the needle we used. It is large and not too sharp but sharp enough to go through all of the layers.
