Today was cold and dreary so Frank, Pumpkin, and I did some experimenting with marshmallows. First, we observed a few marshmallows in a hot cup of hot cocoa. We checked the status of the marshmallows every two minutes. I had Frank verbally describe what he saw and I recorded it on paper. You could easily have your student draw his own observations on paper and add labels. It took about 6 minutes for our marshmallows to melt.

Finally, the boys built some sculptures using the marshmallows and toothpicks. They had a lot of fun doing this and built some houses. We went over different shapes and made sure to count the sides and the corners. The only problem we had was that the marshmallows were too fresh and so the structures collapsed. Maybe we could try gumdrops next time?
