Advent Book List

I can’t always stick to the exact list, but here are most of the books and activities that I do with the kids.  Sometimes the library doesn’t have a book available so I listed some books as alternatives at the bottom as well as some other activities that need to be squeezed in.  

Day 1 Wreath- Read the Night Before Christmas and If You Take a Mouse to the Movies

Day 2 Snow- make paper snowflakes, Read Look Who’s That Knocking on Christmas Eve.
Day 3 Ornament- Read Mr. Willowby’s Christmas Tree. Make ornaments- maybe a sequin ball this year.  These are an old family favorite.
Day 4 Candy cane- Read There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed  a Bell.  Write letter to Santa
Day 5 Reindeer- Read or watch the Grinch; leave out shoes for St. Nicholas
Day 6 Santa Hat- Read the Baker’s Dozen by Aaron Shepard.  Talk and read about St. Nicholas
Day 7 Penguin- Tacky the Penguin and learn some penguin facts
Day 8 Train- Read or watch the Polar Express with some hot cocoa
Day 9 Angel- Read Christmas Cobwebs
Day 10 Snowman- Read or watch Frosty with some snowman soup
Day 11 Rudolph- Read Rudolph, sing the song, have Rudolph toast for breakfast
Day 12 Holly- Read the Night Tree by Eve Bunting and then decorate a tree outside with popcorn and fruit to give the birds a treat.
Day 13 House- The  Three Bear’s Christmas; make bear cookies or ornament. Drive around to look at Christmas lights.
Day 14 Mitten- Read The Mitten by Jan Brett; 3 Little Kittens and read One Snowy Night- maybe buy some mittens to donate to a shelter or give away our coats that no longer fit.
Day 15 Presents- Read Minerva Louise on Christmas Eve. Get out the elf that will be watching each day and reporting to Santa on behavior.  Make cookies for friends and neighbors. 
Day 16 Stars- make a gumdrop tree or ornament. Read the Christmas Humbugs
Day 17 Candle- A Christmas Carol story or the movie; talk about German history of candles on the Christmas tree.
Day 18 Joy Ball- Read Santa’s Snowcat. List things that are joyful about each other.
Day 19 Snowflake- Snowflake Bently; learn about snowflakes; marshmallows with toothpick snowflakes
Day 20 Peppermint Candy- Read or watch the Nutcracker, listen to the music
Day 21 Ho Ho Ho- McDuff’s New Friend
Day 22 Sleigh- Merry Christmas Big Hungry Bear
Day 23 Stocking- Read Santa Mouse. feel inside stockings and guess what is in there game
Day 24 Gingerbread- Gingerbread Night with the cousins at P’s house!  Read the Night Before Christmas. Leave out reindeer food and cookies for Santa. Track Santa on the internet.
Day 25 Tree- Christmas Day!
Clifford’s First Christmas, Max and Ruby’s Christmas Tree, The Littlest Christmas Tree, Merry Christmas Curious George, Shhhh!, Get Dressed Santa, The Little Fir Tree by Margaret Wise Brown, Mrs. Wishy Washy’s Christmas, Bear Stays Up, M is for Mistletoe, Petunia’s Christmas, Santa’s Stuck, Christmas Trolls, Dream Snow, Too Many Tamales, Gingerbread Friends by Jan Brett (a sequel to Gingerbread Baby)
Books I haven’t read yet but plan to:  Stanley’s Christmas Adventure, Amelia Bedelia and the Christmas List
Things to do: Bake cookies, make wrapping paper or gift tags, coloring sheet/word search, christmas puzzle, watch Charlie Brown Christmas,  christmas program, wrap presents, homemade presents, make thank you cards, shovel someone’s driveway.
